Wingspan Birds of Prey Trust has erected 12 nest boxes in the area to provide potential nest and roost sites for offspring from the pair. Other threats include intensive farming practices in the vicinity of the nest tree, domestic and feral cats, swamp harriers, possums and mustelids, and the use of anticoagulant rodenticides. When caught out in daylight, the barn owls in Northland have been harassed by magpies. In Kaitaia a recently fledged barn owl was found with a broken wing probably caused by a collision with a wire fence, and an adult bird found dead with lacerations to its wing, likely the result of barbed wire. Wire fences and vehicle collisions are likely to be a threat to barn owls in New Zealand. Accepted records include: Barrytown 1947, Haast 1955, Rununga 1960, Papatoetoe 1983, Auckland International airport 1985, Hokitika 1988, Christchurch 1989, South Kaipara Heads 1990, New Plymouth 1991, Whenuapai 1992, Waikato 2001, Lyttelton 2001, and Kaitaia 2008. There are thirteen records for New Zealand including the breeding pair near Kaitaia. Recent reports to Wingspan include South Brighton (Christchurch), Kumeu, Whenuapai, Hunua Ranges, Pokeno, and across Northland. The current nest tree entrance is c.11 m above ground level in an old puriri tree. The adults and fledglings have been observed roosting in the small stands of native trees in the vicinity of the nest tree and up to 6 km away. Their surrounding habitat consists mainly of long kikuyu grass dairy pasture with numerous drains. The Kaitaia barn owls nest in open woodland within an open grass farmland matrix. Evidence of captive-bred cage escapees near Auckland during the 1990s, and the ability of barn owls to disperse widely, makes it difficult to deduce the origin of the pair established near Kaitaia. They have arrived in New Zealand by a variety of means, including as windblown stragglers, and on aircraft and ships. In New Zealand they have been recorded at scattered locations throughout the country, particularly on the West Coast. The barn owl’s loud hissing screech could possibly be confused with some brush-tailed possum vocalisations.īarn owls are widespread on mainland Australia and on the islands of the Southwest Pacific. Similar species: there are no other medium-sized pale owls in New Zealand, and so the barn owl cannot be confused with the smaller darker native morepork and the even smaller little owl. Recently fledged juveniles call more plaintive and higher pitched than adults. The long legs are fully covered with white feathers, down to the greyish toes. The throat, breast and belly are white below with some dark spots. Its crown, nape, back and upper-wings are orangey buff and grey, delicately marked with white spots. The barn owl is a very pale, medium-sized owl with a distinctive white, heart-shaped face, black eyes and a pale bill. Some barn owls are thought to have flown to New Zealand from Australia, while others are known or presumed to have arrived as stowaways on aircraft and ships. The nearest populations outside of New Zealand are in Australia and the islands of the Southwest Pacific. Single birds have been recorded in New Zealand on a dozen occasions since 1947, and since 2008 a single pair has bred in Northland. Barn owls are the most widely distributed species of owl in the world, breeding on all continents except Antarctica.

It’s important to avoid that pressure by creating a healthy balance of hip and pelvis mobility and lumbar stability.Īddressing the hip flexors is a key starting point for hip and pelvis mobility. Unfortunately, if your hips are tight or your pelvis doesn’t move freely, you put pressure on your low back. The hips are designed with ball-and-socket joints to enable rotation in all directions. The lumbar vertebrae in your low back are not designed for twisting they are meant to be stable. Practice two sets for a total of 10 breaths. If you experience cautionary pain when lifting your hips into the bridge, keep your hips and back on the floor as you practice your breaths. Hold this position using the strength of your core and glutes to avoid letting your low back arch.Īvoid upward movement of your rib cage while breathing you shouldn’t feel stress or tension in your jaw, neck or shoulders. Maintaining the bridge posture, take five long, deep breaths, focused on proper rib movement, particularly on exhales. For information on breathing’s impact on overall health, read my breathing series.īegin on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor, hip-distance apart.Īvoid letting your low back arch by using the strength of your core and glutes. In addition to the 5-7-3 breathing exercise from Part I, try my breathing bridge exercise by following the directions below or watching this video (shown above). Deep breathing also decreases your body’s physiological stress response and facilitates recovery. Because your primary breathing muscle, the diaphragm, is also a core and postural muscle that attaches to your lumbar spine and rib cage, by establishing proper breathing biomechanics, you can realign your spine, pelvis and rib cage while strengthening your core. Practicing proper diaphragmatic breathing is the foundation of all the back pain treatment and prevention programs I use in professional sports. Talk with your doctor to understand the source of your pain and get approval before beginning any exercise program.Īlthough many of these exercises can work for low back pain with sciatic nerve symptoms, Part III in our series will focus on sciatica and offer additional methods for managing its nerve-related presentations. I have designed these exercises to address the most common causes of back pain, but because not all back pain responds to the same remedy, not all exercises work for everyone. When practicing any exercises, stop immediately if your pain increases or feels “wrong.” Remember to pay attention to any sensations you experience.įind out the source of your back pain and get a doctor's approval before starting an exercise program. Here are three exercise categories for addressing low back pain with examples for you to try. Mindfulness meditation and breathing techniques can help strengthen your mind-body connection as you work through the exercises below. The latter is the kind of pain we want to move through to achieve relief. Leveraging your mind-body connection, you can better differentiate between cautionary sensations warning you to avoid particular movements and less severe ones stemming from muscle tension and joint stiffness. With back pain, misunderstanding or ignoring pain messages can cause injury, while overreacting can lead to unnecessary tests, medications and procedures that could slow down recovery. The mind-body connection is the bridge that helps you develop an attuned sense of your physical state, enabling you to respond to your body’s messages. Because most of these tie to muscular issues, using corrective exercises to mobilize and strengthen the muscles that support and move the spine is key to reducing and preventing back pain. The most common causes of back issues include poor breathing mechanics and posture, hip tension, physical trauma, age-related degeneration, sedentary lifestyle, excess weight or pregnancy, and stress. Your physiology rewards your activity by releasing feel-good hormones and decreasing stress. Conversely, movement heals and sustains you. When you’re sedentary for long periods, muscles weaken, connective tissue stiffens and joint lubrication reduces. Now, we’ll focus on helping you move through exercises to determine which ones can alleviate pain and restore your back health.ĭesigned for movement, your body needs to stay active for good health. In Part I of this series, we looked at why it’s important to understand the potential causes of back pain to assess the best treatment course. That notion may seem counterintuitive, but exercise is more effective for relieving lower back pain than passive approaches such as medication, bed rest and support braces, according to research. However, for most back pain sufferers, the path to relief actually involves moving through the pain. When you’re suffering from back pain, perhaps the last thing you want to do is get out of bed. Underneath the crane you will see two chairs, a table and a checkers board. Head to the roof top and go round the side towards the crane. The Sick Bomb is a secret blueprint which can be found on top of the Tower in the Slums. If the player picks up the book (shown in the image below) and then attempts to play the guitar again it will sound beautiful. It will sound really bad!! Later in the game when you're searching the school, there's a closet at the back of the classroom with a book called Guitar Lessons inside. Players can interact with the guitar and attempt to play it at the beginning of the game. The guitar is a fun Easter Egg located in the Tower, in the players room. While inside the cave, a message will appear saying "Your destiny is to build your legend (and get loot)" Guitar Location: Slums, your room in the Tower. Jump over the barricade and swim underwater until the Loot Cave appears. There is no direct access to the cave from the land, so you need to jump into the large area of water and then swim towards the very narrow path leading west. Follow the map location shown on the image above (yellow star), which is in the North East of the map. As a tribute to the Loot Cave, the developers of Dying Light have created an Easter Egg in the Slums. The strategy was highly effective, that was until Bungie nerfed the crap out of it. Players would group up and spend hours farming Engrams in the hope of acquiring Legendary or Exotic gear. This simple cave located in Skywatch was the holy grail for Engram farming in the early days of Destiny. Loot Cave Location: Slums Those who have played Destiny will know only too well about the Loot Cave. Turn on the switch and you'll see some zombies doing a funky dance just like Jackson's Thriller. The switch is located on the left hand side as you enter the hanger. I have highlighted the exact location for the hanger with a yellow star on the map above. Enter the 2nd hanger (which Babe walks right past) and activate the electric switch inside. During the Escort mission where you need to escort several people around the map you'll see a couple of hangers whilst escorting Baber the Werewolf. It can easily chop through groups of zombies with one hit and is a hell of a lot of fun!! Dancing Zombies Location: Slums A fun easter egg this one. It has a damage rating of 485 and a durability of 35. Inside it is the Korek Machete which is a Machete weapon named after one of the games developers. Climb to the very top of the roof and drop down between the crates and you'll see a blue toolbox (see image below): You need to kick this toolbox about 40 times to make it open. There is a building shaped like a C to the East. To find it go to the middle Safe Zone shown on the map above. The good news is that if you go back to the swords original location you can pick up the Blueprint for the sword, giving you the option to create a new one again!! Korek Machete Location: Slums This secret Machete is located in the North end of the Slums. Sadly it has a very low durability rating (7) and it cannot be repaired. The secret sword called EXPCalibur is an immensely powerful sword that kills zombies with one hit. You will pick up the sword and the dead body will catch fire. Hold down the X button and wait about a minute or two for the progress bar to fill up. Swim out to the tiny island in the water and you'll see the sword impaled on a dead body. Follow the location shown on the image above which is in the far South East of the Slums map. This easter egg rewards the player with the secret sword weapon called EXPCalibur, a reference to the legendary sword of King Arthur that had magical powers. 8 of the Easter Eggs are located at the beginning of the game in the Slums, whilst the remaining 4 are found in Old Town. In this post I'm going to cover all of the Easter Eggs in Dying Light and show you the exact location for each of them. Players can get hold of the Sick Bomb, Korek Machete and Excalibur's sword for free. Some of these are just visual encounters but other Easter Eggs reward you with secret blueprints and weapons. Like all good open world games, Dying Light contains a great collection of Easter Eggs. “I know nothing in the world that has as much power as a word. “The art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe.” – Gustav Flaubertħ. “They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream by night.” – Edgar Allan PoeĦ. Inspirational Quotes on Writing: Imaginationġ. Certainly, that’s where we can come in □Ībove all, we hope these 50 Inspirational Quotes on Writing will keep you motivated and energized throughout 2021. If the first digit cannot be divided by the divisor, write a 0 above the first digit of the divisor. It’s a new year and, therefore, we want to help kick it off right with a collection of our favorite inspirational quotes on writing! We always start a new year with resolutions, but often it’s hard to stick with our goals. Starting from left to right, divide the first digit in the dividend by the divisor. To divide 100 by 7, where 100 is the dividend and 7 is the divisor, set up the long division problem by writing the dividend under a radicand, with the divisor to the left (divisorvdividend), then use the steps described below: To perform long division, first identify the dividend and divisor. Long division can be used either to find a quotient with a remainder, or to find an exact decimal value. In other words, 9 divided by 4 equals 2, with a remainder of 1. Instead, knowing that 8 ÷ 4 = 2, this can be used to determine that 9 ÷ 4 = 2 R1. For example, 9 cannot be evenly divided by 4. One way is to divide with a remainder, meaning that the division problem is carried out such that the quotient is an integer, and the leftover number is a remainder. There are two ways to divide numbers when the result won't be even. In this case, the number of people can be divided evenly between each group, but this is not always the case. Thus, assuming that there are 8 people and the intent is to divide them into 4 groups, division indicates that each group would consist of 2 people. The divisor is the desired number of groups of objects, and the quotient is the number of objects within each group. One way to think of the dividend is that it is the total number of objects available. The number being divided is the dividend, the number that divides the dividend is the divisor, and the quotient is the result: Generally, a division problem has three main parts: the dividend, divisor, and quotient. In order to more effectively discuss division, it is important to understand the different parts of a division problem. For example, 2 goes into 8 4 times, so 8 divided by 4 equals 2.ĭivision can be denoted in a few different ways. Division can be thought of as the number of times a given number goes into another number. The arithmetic operations are ways that numbers can be combined in order to make new numbers. Division is one of the basic arithmetic operations, the others being multiplication (the inverse of division), addition, and subtraction. In addition, Gross covered Pac-10 basketball broadcasts for TCS/Metro and ESPN, color analysis for Philadelphia 76ers broadcasts, and color for the Mutual radio network's coverage of the NBA championships (1978). His original broadcast partners on the Seahawks radio broadcasts were Don Heinrich and Wayne Cody. When the expansion Seattle Seahawks began NFL preseason play in 1976, Gross became their play-by-play announcer, an assignment which eventually stretched out 17 years. He later continued broadcasting sports on KIRO 710 Radio in Seattle in 1973, covering University of Washington football and basketball, and radio and TV broadcasting of the NBA SuperSonics. At K-JOY Gross was play-by-play broadcaster for the University of the Pacific football and basketball. Although local co-op is not too uncommon, PC split-screen games are fairly rare, so any new (or old) projects that embrace the feature tend to conjure up some excitement. The latter has been available on consoles for more than a decade, but this update was still a nice and random surprise for people who might be interested in revisiting RE5's PC port. In February 2023, Capcom released a PC patch for Resident Evil 5 that removed the defunct Games for Windows Live and added split-screen support. Even though these types of games can be frustrating, Totally Reliable Delivery Service's quirky presentation and humorous attitude lend themselves to a hilarious rather than infuriating time. Players will find themselves "working together" to try and complete their deliveries, although they are arguably more likely to get in each other's way than actually help. While possible solo, this indie game is far better when experienced with friends. Sounds easy, right? Well, Totally Reliable Delivery Service is a physics-based game, which means the characters are unwieldy and far from the ideal picks to carry fragile boxes. This means they will need to fill up their chosen vehicle with the requested items, make the journey, and then complete the delivery. Set in a charming sandbox, players take on the role of delivery workers who are tasked with traveling across the city in order to complete tasks. Totally Reliable Delivery Service has a simple premise: deliver the goods. This allows the team to coordinate their load-outs, adding an element of strategy to the matches. Supporting 4-player co-op (and friendly fire), Helldivers is at its best when a group of soldiers is taken on the Cyborgs or bugs. The developer's crowning achievement is undoubtedly Helldivers, a twin-stick shooter that pits humanity against three enemies in a gloriously over-the-top war.Īlthough the core gameplay is typical for the genre, the title gets most of the basics right, and it also includes a fun multiplayer option that expanded its replayability. 2011's Magicka is a solid adventure game that is only difficult to recommend because its sequel is superior meanwhile, Gauntlet is a solid co-op dungeon crawler. Gameplay-wise, this mode retains many of the same fundamentals as the single-player however, these identical mechanics take on a new flavor when a second player is thrown into the mix.Īrrowhead knows a thing or two about co-op, and while most of the company's projects are not necessarily amazing, they are decent additions to the multiplayer space. Less known is Portal 2's co-op campaign that sees two robots work together to try and complete GLaDOS's various challenges. The 2011 release reached legendary status thanks to its single-player story, which arguably ranks alongside Half-Life 2 as Valve's magnum opus. For one, the title supports split-screen right out of the box, which makes it a more viable option than the Left 4 Dead games. The same could be said for Portal 2 to an extent, although the game is better equipped to take advantage of local two-player action than most of the developer's other projects. While games like Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, Alien Swarm, and Counter-Strike all prioritize teamwork, they are generally associated with online multiplayer or LAN support more so than local co-op. You can still however play without the DLCs but they add some cool stuff to the game, and even without DLC you will still be able to get enough stuff to entartain you for a while.īut if you want to wait for a sale I am pretty sure it will come on the summer sale, before that I am unsure if there will even be one.Valve is responsible for some of the most popular and long-lasting multiplayer games on the market, most of which revolve around co-op. The ATB boots allow you to run normally through water and snow making them almost a must have for snow or jungle maps. The drone allows you to spend less time searching blindly for items that give research points(it reveals them on the map). Nothing really stands out as much as those 2 things. "When it comes to DLCs the only 2 I can say that are really important are the Ranger DLC(for the UAV drone) and the Terrain Specialist(for the All Terrain Boots). I will delete the previous poster's reply for clarification as the information in there was misleading, but I can copy the rest of his reply which is relevant: The amount of enemies do scale depending on the number of players, so missions are doable with just you two :) The only hard bit may be Retaliatory Strikes at first, but with practice they should be fine! You and your girlfriend can definitely play together, but she would have to be a guest under your Steam account, as Steam does not allow for multiple account logins at once. Helldivers DOES HAVE local coop on PC, which means that you can have up to 4 players on a single PC as long as you are using gamepads. I'm really glad that it's possible to do with only 2. Just to follow up some loopholes some might find in this answer, Harry casts Sectumsempra on Draco Malfoy without knowing its effect and is seen to be very regretful about what happens to Malfoy. That is the best explanation of non-use of lethal Muggle weapons. I know it would look bad-ass to whip out a gun with his left hand and shout “Dodge this!” with a smug face, but it wouldn’t go with HP’s theme of love. Even after going through this ordeal for 17 years, he just casts Expelliarmus. Even at the end, during his duel with Voldemort, Harry only strikes to disarm. Even though many close to Harry are killed in each of the seven parts, Harry never uses a killing curse. The lowest common denominator of the HP series has been love. Refer to that restaurant scene in Deathly Hallows. (in-universe answers only unless there are some authoritative out-of-universe statements that are part of canon).Ī logical and acceptable in-universe explanation of why Harry, Hermione and the Order of the Phoenix don’t use Muggle technology, specifically guns and knives, is that they never attempt to kill, but only to incapacitate or capture Death Eaters. The question begs itself - why not? Considering the fact that Rowling generally tried to be logical and consistent in building the HP universe, I feel like there must be some in-universe explanation for this that I just didn't notice. So it's not like the idea of using technology against magic would be impossible to come up with. Magic themes in Conan books, or Beowulf, or heck, A Yankee in King Arthur's Court). I mean, it's a basic part of human myth (see Steel vs. This means there's an implicit understanding by Death Eaters that they don't stand a chance against armed Muggles even given the magical disparity.Ĭonsidering Harry and Hermione's overall adaptability and inventiveness (and brains in the latter case), it's mind-boggling that the idea of fighting Death Eaters with modern technology completely slipped their mind. Hence all the efforts to cloak their society (basically, do you REALLY want every Muggle gunning for you, even with Magic)? The idea of how control over the Muggle world seems to be more indirect, by Death Eaters asserting mind-control over the government. The second thing is it's clear, at least initially, that wizards are afraid of Muggles finding out about them. Or, for that matter, ANY Muggle technology of the late 20th century? Cue Arthur C. So I'm looking for an explanation - ideally in-universe, but possibly just some statement by JKR - of why the Muggle-born OotP - who are likely very much at ease AND familiar with Muggle technology and live in the late 20th century - do not use guns. Harry or Hermione) to greatly equalize the power between any regular Death Eaters and themselves, and even perhaps help against Voldemort (who can't be killed with a bullet, but, at best, would need to expend magical energy and time into conjuring a shield, and, at worst, be stopped/interrupted/driven off). So, the guns should at best allow an over-matched OotP member (e.g. Those spells obviously take effort/energy/time to cast (not everyone's Dumbledore)ĪND more likely than not most Death Eaters wouldn't recognize a Muggle gun for a threat (or realize what kind of threat) till too late. There may likely be spell(s) to protect from projectiles - witness Dumbledore's shield deployed when Voldemort sent a bunch of glass at him during the Duel in the Ministry Atrium at the end of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (according to Wikia, possibly an unusually powerful Protego or the Silver shield). Therefore, it's almost a certainty that an average wizard would be vulnerable to, say, a bunch of bullets. witness injuries from being hit by Bludgers or just colliding with things when playing Quidditch). So basicly its like splitting 1st gear in half with the aux box. After the truck is out of the hole mud etc.and on flat level ground you would shift the aux box from "low" to "direct" accelarate then shift 2-3-4-5 with the main. If you are very heavy or in a hole and need to climb out you would put the aux or compound box into "low" and use the main in 1st. you only shift the main stick (closest to your leg).1-2-3-4-5 the aux box stays in "Direct" A 2 stick 6 speed is realy a 5 speed with the option of a low first gear for extream off road or heavy hauling. |
